International Human Rights Day

Fifty years ago, the United Nations General Assembly adopted two global treaties that would forever shape worldwide human rights – but challenges still remain, and the documents are as relevant today as they were when they were created.

As we look back on a year that has posed many challenges, we can also be confident that by standing fast to our commitment to human rights protection, Kuwait and its partners in the worldwide community can build a world of lasting freedom.

This year’s theme which revolves around rights and freedoms – freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear is also meant to highlight the two International Covenants on Human Rights: the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which together with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights form the International Bill on Human Rights. Worldwide human rights and democratic principles can serve as important guides in this process. Promoting and protecting our rights and freedoms is everywhere a critical aspect of reconciliation, sustainable development and national success.

These two core treaties set out the civil, political, economic, cultural and social rights that belong to human beings from their birth and throughout their lives, and have changed the destiny of many people, it said.

In a news release issued by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Mr. Jazairy called for the limitation in scope and time of such measures and their linking to achieving specific purposes, at the end of his first official visit to the country to assess their adverse impact on the enjoyment of human rights.

In October we celebrated the 70th anniversary of the United Nations Charter, which established an organization dedicated to global cooperation upon the three pillars of peace and security, development and human rights.

Thailand has experienced significant economic growth over past decades and pulled many out of poverty, ensuring improvements in economic rights.

She says in Fiji, the government has pledged to ratify the convention against torture and re-established the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission. I am proud to note that His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Amir of the State of Kuwait, emphasised the commitment of his Government to sustainable development in his address to the United Nations summit.

The network of EU delegations and EU Member State Embassies throughout the world, the EU Special Representative for Human Rights Stavros Lambrinidis, and their teams in EU capitals, joined forces on Thursday to celebrate Human Rights Day, according to the Delegation of the EU to Bangladesh.
