Governor: Driverless train carrying 50 was tampered with

The MBTA said in its release Thursday morning that a Red Line train left Braintree Station at 6:08 a.m. without a driver. Things didn’t exactly go haywire from there, as the MBTA explained in their statement.

Workers for the T were able to board the train and take it to JFK/UMass, where passengers were able to leave the train before it was taken out of service.

Officials say they are interviewing witnesses and a train operator as they look into a report that a safety device in the train’s cab may have been the subject of tampering.

It blew through four stops before MBTA crews disabled it by cutting power to the rail line, officials said. He added that the train’s controls were manipulated, causing the train to move without an operator.

The train continued to roll through Quincy Adams, Quincy Center and Wollaston stations and stopped just past North Quincy.

“My only concern was people trying to open the train when we don’t know what’s going on”, said the passenger, who was not identified.

In a statement, Gov. Charlie Baker said he’s “grateful no passengers were injured in this troubling incident and will be monitoring the investigation closely”.

The operator is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at South Shore Hospital, 5 Investigates has learned.

MBTA crews boarded the train after it was brought to a halt.
