Malloy’s office is seeking federal government approval for the state to use federal watch lists for this goal, his office stated in a news release explaining his plans.

Those denied permit would be able to appeal the decision. Gun rights advocates oppose the proposal because they say it violates the rights of people who have not been convicted of a crime.

Malloy said discussions with the White House are ongoing and he wasn’t sure when Connecticut’s gun ban would be implemented.

Daniel Malloy today issued an executive order preventing the sale of guns to people on the no fly list, according to news reports.

A spokesman for the National Rifle Association told me a terrorist watch list ban would only affect 2% of the individuals among the thousands of people on the list, since most are foreign nationals. “So in CT we shall be acting”, Malloy said.

The announcement comes after the Federal Bureau of Investigation learned that a radicalized couple was responsible for a mass shooting in San Bernardino, CA that left 14 people dead.

Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty, a Democrat who represents District 5 of CT is a cosponsor of H.R. 1076, the Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act, which Republican U.S. Rep Peter King, of NY, sponsored.

“I commend Governor Malloy for taking executive action where Congress has failed to do the same”. I am frustrated that our nation is having the wrong debate [about gun control and terrorism] and I’d like to see us focus on the right one, ” Malloy said.

Malloy was governor during a 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, that claimed 26 lives. “These are measures that will safe lives”.
