List of nominees for the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards
The nominees for the best television drama series have been announced in Beverly Hills, California. This is a contrast to yesterday’s SAG award announcements, in which only five people of color-Idris Elba, Rami Malek, Viola Davis, Queen Latifah and Uzo Aduba-were nominated. Of those seven, six scored various nominations for the Golden Globes.

Also with four nods is Alejandro Inarritu’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning “Birdman”: the frontier epic “The Revenant“, which was nominated for best picture, drama, and best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio. The lone exception is Johnny Depp, who failed to get a Best Actor nomination for his work in “Black Mass”.
As for the other TV nods, I think most of us have agreed that this season of “American Horror Story: Hotel” has been one of the show’s weakest; yet, there it is in the Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television category (not to worry, though; if there’s any justice in this world, “Fargo” is sure to win). “The Danish Girl” was highlighted for its actors – both Eddie Redmayne and Vikander got Globe nominations – but the film and director didn’t get nominations. In a year that saw Lady Gaga actually earn a Golden Globes nod, there were a ton of shows, actors and actresses who were totally snubbed.
In the best animated film category, the Charlie Kauffman-scripted, stop-motion drama “Anomalisa” slotted in alongside a quartet of more family-friendly releases: “Inside Out”, “The Good Dinosaur”, “The Peanuts Movie” and “Shaun the Sheep Movie”.
Most of the expected contenders came away with something to show from the nominations, including the scientific space adventure “The Martian” (including nods for star Matt Damon and director Ridley Scott) and David O. Russell’s matriarch portrait “Joy” (best picture, comedy and best actress Jennifer Lawrence).
The Golden Globes are sometimes seen as a prelude to the Emmys, so Thursday’s nomination will heighten Hulu’s anticipation for those nominations too.
In January, the Golden Globe for best drama went to “Boyhood”.
Also making out well in the nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association: the comedy “The Big Short”, about the 2008 financial crisis; “The Revenant”, the Leonardo DiCaprio movie about a 19th-century explorer left for dead; and “Steve Jobs”, the Aaron Sorkin-penned drama about the Apple founder.
Miller’s film will also compete against Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight, Lenny Abrahamson’s Room and the critically praised Carol, directed by Todd Haynes. If I may call upon a description I once wrote and still stand by, “The Golden Globes are a fundamentally goofy proposition, given out by a tiny club of journalists at a ceremony that’s famous for the fact that everyone gets hammered”.
The nominees for best drama series include only Fox’s breakout hit “Empire” among broadcast networks, plus USA’s “Mr. Robot”, Netflix’s “Narcos”, Starz’ “Outlander” and “Game of Thrones” on HBO.
The nominees for best actor in a TV comedy series are: Aziz Ansari, “Master of None”; Gael Garcia Bernal, “Mozart in the Jungle”; Rob Lowe, “The Grinder”; Patrick Stewart, “Blunt Talk”; Jeffrey Tambor, “Transparent”. – “Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez on her nod for best actress in a TV comedy.
