The 2016 Golden Globe nominations were announced Thursday, and this year is shaping up to be very interesting. This photo provided by The Weinstein Company shows, Kyle Chandler, left, as Harge Aird, and Cate Blanchett as Carol Aird in a scene from the film, “Carol”.
Though the Golden Globes spread its nominations around, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association swooned hardest for Todd Haynes’ 1950s romance “Carol”, which landed a leading five nominations including best film drama. (Globe voters also nominated it for Best Director and Screenplay.) Then again, the SAGs, whose nominations were announced yesterday, also put “Spotlight” on their list for Best Ensemble (their equivalent of Best Picture) without nominating any individual members from it except Rachel McAdams.
Timothy Gray, awards editor at industry magazine Variety, said the nominations reflected the cross-section of films in the running for this year’s prizes.
Meanwhile, traditional TV broadcasters like ABC, FOX and PBS earned 4 nominations each, but CBS only clocked in with one.
The list of nominees for the major Golden Globe prizes demonstrates that cable and streaming shows are continuing to shake up the TV landscape in a profound way.
Close behind was Adam McKay’s finance comedy “The Big Short” with four nominations, including best picture – comedy, and acting nominations for Steve Carell and Christian Bale. His rivals include Bryan Cranston for “Rrumbo”, Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Revenant”, Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs” and Will Smith for “Concussion”.
Alicia Vikander, best actress nominee for “The Danish Girl” and best supporting actress nominee for “Ex Machina”: “To be considered amongst all these brilliant actresses and their outstanding performances is such an honour”. Just two years after Netflix scooped up its first Globes win, four of the six nominated comedies-Orange is the New Black, Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle, and Casual-are distributed by Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu. “I’m nominated as an actress for a Golden Globe what a dream is this real!” Each network received 4, 5, 2, 3, and 2 Golden Globe Awards nominations, respectively. All of these shows and actors were great, but I didn’t know they’d get the recognition they deserved. In addition to two nominations for limited series “Flesh and Bone”, Starz earned two for the feminist historical epic “Outlander”; USA, formerly a place for popular, critic-proof programming and reruns of old broadcast series, broke out with nominations for Best Drama and Best Actor Rami Malek for the acclaimed “Mr. Robot”.
Sylvester Stallone got a nomination, for “Creed”. That means a total shutout for Mad Men’s actresses, comedy actors as a whole, and most of Orange Is the New Black, whose entire cast basically counts as “supporting”.
Director Paul Feig – Nominee for Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical “Spy”: “I can’t thank the HFPA enough for recognizing amusing movies”.
