Bastian Schweinsteiger given three-game violent conduct ban

The 31-year-old was involved in an altercation with West Ham defender, Winston Reid, during their 0-0 draw at Old Trafford last Saturday.

The incident was not mentioned in referee Mark Clattenburg’s post-match report, leaving the FA free to punish Schweinsteiger retrospectively. Schweinsteiger’s ban will go into immediate effect, likely opening the door for Michael Carrick to enter the starting XI in the short term. His manager Slaven Bilic was similarly condemning, saying “It was a clear red card – a straight red without any doubts”.

Given United’s exit from the Champions League this week, Louis van Gaal will face another headache with Schweinsteiger’s absence as he looks for a response to their 3-2 defeat to Wolfsburg when his side take on Bournemouth at Dean Court on Saturday evening.

On top of the ongoing injury crisis, the Reds will be without midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has been handed a three-game domestic ban by the FA.

Former referee Dermot Gallacher told Sky Sports News HQ on Monday: “I’m not convinced the referee’s seen what we’ve seen”.

Despite his performances, Schweinsteiger will be important for Manchester United as the Red Devils have a lengthy injury list, with 9 first team players injured.

“We know what we have in Bastian”.

“Playing for Manchester United comes with a lot of pressure”, said the midfielder. You’ve got to give even an experienced player like him time to adapt to a new league.
