The Golden Globes: Business As Usual
And just like Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara competing against each other in a lead acting category, so are Christian Bale and Steve Carell squaring off in the comedy category. Four of the six comedy series nods went to streaming sites, including Amazon (a big victor previous year for “Transparent”) and new-to-the-awards-game Hulu.

Two more high-profile awards groups announced their nominations this week, further shaping what so far has been a wide-open Oscar race.
The folks at TV’s Big Four networks might as well have slept in Thursday morning and skipped the announcement of the Golden Globes nominations.

The nominess for best actress a TV drama series: Caitriona Balfe, “Outlander”; Viola Davis, “How to Get Away with Murder”; Eva Green, “Penny Dreadful”; Taraji P. Henson, “Empire”; Robin Wright, “House of Cards”. Narcos got nods for both Best TV Series, Drama and Best Actor in a TV Series, Drama for lead Wagner Moura, ousting the critical darlings (The Americans, The Leftovers) and older Emmy stalwarts (Downton Abbey, Homeland) alike. Actor Jeffrey Tambor was nominated in both awards’ Male Actor, Comedy categories, while the show as a whole was nominated for a Best TV Series, Comedy Golden Globe and an Outstanding Ensemble Performance, Comedy SAG Award. She earn a nod for best actress in a drama for her outstanding performance as a supportive wife in “The Danish Girl”, AND for playing a robot facing an existential crisis of sorts in “Ex-Machina”. CW’s “Jane the Virgin” leading lady Gina Rodriguez – last year’s victor – and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” star Rachel Bloom are pitted against each other in the musical or comedy actress category.
The nominees for best director are Tom McCarthy (“Spotlight”), Ridley Scott (“The Martian”), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (“The Revenant”), George Miller (“Mad Max: Fury Road”) and Todd Haynes (“Carol”).
“Those trends don’t cover all the Globes” eccentricities – no limited series nomination for Show Me a Hero, for example, even in a less competitive category – but they do explain some of them.
There were no nominations this year for such early-touted awards-hopeful films as “Black Mass”, “Macbeth” (Fassbender fans in the HFPA either preferred his “Steve Jobs” performance or haven’t seen his Shakespeare adaptation yet), or “Sicario” (even though it’s one of the year’s biggest indie hits).
The nominations veered from the predictions of industry experts, who had bet on “Spotlight” and “The Revenant” getting the most nods.
While Schumer and Lawrence are now working on their first screenplay together, as HNGN previous reported, Schumer joked that the battle for the Golden Globe could end their friendship. Just throw a party, invite the people you want to invite and let them all make speeches.
