SAG nominations bring murky awards season into better focus
“I am celebrating my SAG nomination with my family in Dubai”.

The nominations of “Beasts of No Nation” and “Straight Outta Compton”, which each function black male casts, got here at a time when Hollywood films have been criticized for lack of racial variety.
The drama I Smile Back has grossed a minuscule $59,000 since opening in October to stark reviews (at aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, 55% of critics liked it, while just 48% of audiences did).
This photo provided by Open Road Films shows, Rachel McAdams, from left, as Sacha Pfeiffer, Mark Ruffalo as Michael Rezendes, Brian d’Arcy James as Matt Carroll, Michael Keaton as Walter “Robby” Robinson and John Slattery as Ben Bradlee Jr., in a scene from the film, “Spotlight”.
No one really expected the NWA biopic to score any individual acting nominations – though, many have argued that it deserves them – but outstanding cast in a motion picture seemed like a category where the film could score a well deserved win.
The SAG Awards are presented by SAG-AFTRA, the performing actors’ union. Elba received the nod for his terrifying depiction of Commandant in Netflix drama Beasts of No Nation, while Rylance was nominated for his performance in Steven Spielberg’s espionage thriller Bridge of Spies.
The SAG nominations yesterday were announced 24 hours before the Golden Globe nominees are set to be revealed, by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
Though “Straight Outta Compton” was a box office and critical hit, its award season prospects were a big unknown. The mostly baffling choices (full list here) betrayed an old-fashioned approach to what qualifies as the “best” when it comes to TV’s increasingly wide range of performances-and a dispiriting retreat to the familiar rather than a determination to highlight the new. The film, which is mostly seeing praise for Lawrence’s performance, didn’t get nominated at all. I am truly thrilled and grateful to be nominated for a SAG award this year. A lot of the same industry types that make up the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ voting body hold membership in other entertainment unions that annually mete out awards recognition, so the nominations that the Writers Guild of America, the Directors Guild of America, and the Screen Actors Guild decide on can be reliable predictors for the slate of Oscar contenders.
Certain favorites are standing out from the acting pack with SAG nominations: the stars of Carol (Cate Blanchett as lead actress and Rooney Mara as supporting actress), Brie Larson in Room and Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant.
The effort paid off with a nomination for top cast performance and for supporting actor Christian Bale, giving the December movie a leg up on its Christmas Day competitors – “The Revenant”, “Joy” and “The Hateful Eight”.
“I’m still in shock, but I’m very excited”, Silverman told ET at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment breakfast on Wednesday.

Silverman’s mother died in August. We’re having ice cream sundaes tonight! Big winners in film included Trumbo, which leads the pack with three total nominations, while Carol, The Danish Girl, The Big Short, Steve Jobs, Room, Spotlight and Beasts of No Nation garnered two apiece.
