Police investigate death of Port Huron woman mauled by dogs

According to an investigator with the medical examiner’s office, Rebecca Hardy’s death was caused by multiple injuries and was ruled a suicide on Wednesday.

The dogs – a pit bull and pit bull husky mix – were housed and quarantined in a St. Clair County animal shelter pending the investigation.

A GoFundMe account, which claims that “it is unknown if she was aware of a dog in the yard” has been set up to help the family with Rebecca Hardy’s funeral costs.

Hardy suffered extensive injuries to her face and neck and later died at Beaumont Hospital.

“She climbed the fence and jumped in and basically subjected herself to the attacks, which constitutes a purposeful act”, Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Ljubisa Dragovic said. She left barefoot and climbed over the fence into the yard where the dogs lived.

“No she had a 1-year-old daughter, her sisters loved her”, Engel said.

“It’s a sad story, but these are the facts, Dragovic tells the Port Huron Times Herald”.

A witness attempted to stop the dogs from attacking Hardy.

Hardy is survived by her 18-month-old daughter and her fiancé Matthew Grattan, who told a local newspaper he questions the suicide finding.

The pit bull and pit bull-husky mix that mauled the mother were put down the day after the attack, The Times Herald reported.

The city is reportedly reviewing its dog ordinances since Hardy’s death and Geneke Lyons’s conviction of second-degree murder – last week, Lyons’s four pit bulls mauled and killed 4-year-old Xavier Strickland in Detroit.

Authorities have said the dogs’ owner has been cooperative during their investigation and hasn’t been charged.
