The Appeals Committee of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on Thursday rejected Real Madrid‘s appeal over their expulsion from the Kings Cup knockout competition for fielding an ineligible player.
Real president Florentino Perez said last week that he did not accept his club were responsible, as nobody had informed them that Cheryshev was banned.
Los Meringues were kicked out the tournament for fielding an ineligible player in the 3-1 win against Cadiz.
But all indications are that Madrid’s case doesn’t hold water and another failure at appeal has not helped the club’s damaged public image. Cheryshev was carrying a one-match suspension for yellow cards last season, when he played for Villarreal on loan from Madrid.
The club had claimed Cheryshev had not been personally notified of his sanction as their justification for an appeal, which the RFEF shot down in a lengthy statement on Thursday. Real says that neither the player nor the team were aware of Cheryshev’s suspension but the CAD confirmed the punishment a few minutes ago.
Earlier this season, Spanish football saw second-division Osasuna booted out of the cup in an nearly identical case.

Madrid have since stated that they accept the decision and have offered refunds to supporters who had bought tickets in advance for the second leg against Cadiz on December 16.
