Digital TV storms Golden Globes, ousting old favorites

Mark Rylance, best supporting actor nominee for “Bridge of Spies” and best actor, limited TV series “Wolf Hall“: “I want to thank the members of the HFPA for nominating my work in both “Bridge of Spies” and “Wolf Hall“. A few years after suggesting that he could film himself painting a wall and it would get him a Golden Globe nomination (that would be when Depp got nods for “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Tourist” in the same category in the same year), the group failed to nominate his performance in “Black Mass”.

“On one hand, analysing the Golden Globe nominations in the context of Oscar impact is folly”, said Variety co-awards editor Kristopher Tapley.

Along with Netflix, this year’s Golden Globe awards can be seen as a big opportunity for streaming services in general.

TV surprises: The addictive and romantic “Outlander” series shocked with a drama nod, and earned one for lead actress Caitriona Balfe.

Matt Damon for “The Martian”, Steve Carell for “The Big Short”, Al Pacino for “Danny Collins”, Mark Ruffalo for “Infinitely Polar Bear” and Christian Bale for “The Big Short“. Alicia Vikander. The actress got a second nomination for Alex Garland’s “Ex-Machina”, which only further confuses what’s going to happen to her on Oscar nomination morning.

Reporters and industry insiders are gathering at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, for the announcement of nominees for the Golden Globe Awards.

Eddie Redmayne – Nominee for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama “The Danish Girl”: “I am incredibly grateful to the HFPA for having included me in such a brilliant troupe of actors”.

Leading the Golden Globe nominees this year with five, including one for best dramatic picture, was Todd Haynes’ 1950s style romance “Carol”.

“Those trends don’t cover all the Globes” eccentricities – no limited series nomination for Show Me a Hero, for example, even in a less competitive category – but they do explain some of them. Universal Pictures, with the help of “Trainwreck”, tied for eight nominations with The Weinstein Company, which got a boost from “Carol”.

Apart from Carol, the other best motion picture drama nominees are Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant, harrowing kidnap tale Room and Spotlight, which recounts the Boston Globe’s investigation into sex abuse in the Catholic Church. They’re all trying for the supporting role nods.

But for every surprise (Sylvester Stallone), there was an equal snub (Michael Keaton). Not a single comedy series nominee airs on a network, and only one drama series does (Empire, natch).

Best TV series for a comedy or musical was dominated by streamers: Hulu’s new series from Jason Reitman, Casual, Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and Amazon’s Transparent all made the nominations. CW’s “Jane the Virgin” leading lady Gina Rodriguez – last year’s victor – and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” star Rachel Bloom are pitted against each other in the musical or comedy actress category.

On the TV side, they’re still playing games with definitions, classifying the ongoing shows Luther, Fargo and American Horror Story as miniseries so they can nominate Idris Elba, Patrick Wilson, Kirsten Dunst and Lady Gaga for acting awards.

Critics are predicting that DiCaprio will finally take home his first Oscar for his role in the latter, an American biographical epic set in the 1800s and inspired by legendary frontiersman Hugh Glass.
