Timothy Gray, awards editor at industry magazine Variety, said the nominations reflected the cross-section of films in the running for this year’s prizes.
SNUB: The “Mad Men” farewell The Globes haven’t nominated AMC’s landmark drama in the series category since 2011, but any hopes HFPA voters might feel sentimental and hand the show a sentimental sendoff nom were dashed this morning. It’s Louis-Dreyfus’s fourth nomination for the comedy, and the seventh in her career. “The Hollywood Foreign Press, man. I just want to like hug them”. Out of Netflix’s three nominated shows, Orange is the New Black and Narcos rounded up two nominations per program, while the dramas House of Cards and Bloodline and the comedies Master of None and Grace and Frankie each received one. Released in October, the two-hour-plus sci-fi comedy has already grossed more than 1 million in the U.S. Irish actress Caitriona Balfe was also honoured for her part in TV’s Outlander. This is nearly the exact same list that was named by the SAG Awards – now Smith and Johnny Depp, who was nominated by the SAG Awards for “Black Mass”, may be vying for the last slot in this category for the Oscars. In 2012, Jessica Lange won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries, or Television Film.
The fact that Zadora’s billionaire husband Meshulam Riklis flew members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to Las Vegas to hear her sing and dance probably had nothing to do with her Golden Globe Award.
SURPRISE: Mark Ruffalo, “Infinitely Polar Bear” This Sundance dramedy, where Ruffalo plays a father battling bipolar disorder, barely registered at the box office. But the chances of “Max” appearing as a Best Picture nominee have certainly increased with the Golden Globes recognition.
It will compete with blockbuster area journey “The Martian”, Melissa McCarthy caper “Spy”, coming-of-age comedy “Trainwreck” and “Joy”, impressed by the story of the lady who designed the family Miracle Mop.
Will Smith, whose upcoming “Concussion” has drawn headlines for its depiction of head trauma in football, joined the best actor, drama, nominees. Only HBO’s “Game of Thrones” is a returning nominee.

Other notable absentees on the nomination rolls were HBO’s fading “Girls” as well as “True Detective” (which, after landing four nominations in its premiere season, was critically lambasted for its second cycle). Even though it missed out on a deserved best screenplay nomination, mentions for best picture, best director, best original score and best actress for both Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett gave “Carol” a total of 5 nods – more than any other film. Only Rachel McAdams got a nomination for supporting actress.
