Mark Richt passes on UVa., to become next Miami Hurricanes head coach
Former Georgia head football coach Mark Richt is set to take over the position at Miami. Richt said Monday that he welcomed the opportunity of guiding the Bulldogs one more time, but his 15-year run in Athens that yielded a 145-51 record and Southeastern Conference championships in 2002 and 2005 is now at an end.

Wednesday night, Eason liked a tweet congratulating Richt on getting hired by the Hurricanes.
Eason’s quarterback coach, Taylor Barton, told Schodell that Miami is definitely up there after hiring Richt. He is a South Florida native and played for Howard Schnellenberger at Miami, graduating in 1982 when the Hurricanes were just becoming the program that would win five national championships in a 19-season span.
Georgia said assistant head coach Bryan McClendon will serve as interim head coach in the bowl game.
This would be great news for Miami fans, many of whom wanted Richt, including 2 Live Crew great Luther Campbell, who ranked Richt near the top of his wish list and called him “perfect”. Georgia athletics director McGarity expressed his gratitude for Mark Richt’s years at Georgia.
Alabama coach Nick Saban, meanwhile, didn’t take any questions about Smart’s future on Wednesday. It’s possible that Georgia and Miami might meet in a bowl game, though neither team is likely to learn its postseason fate before Sunday.
“I thought it would be a replay of the LSU thing, as soon as the last game is over we’ll announce he’ll be back”, Bowden said, referring to the about face LSU officials had with Les Miles.
Mark Schlabach reported the firing of Richt at Georgia and was among those to break the news.
Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher has rebuild the Seminoles in part by poaching some of the best players from the Miami area, including running back and Heisman Trophy candidate Dalvin Cook.
Some projections have Georgia and Miami playing in a bowl game.
Richt, 55, interviewed with the Hurricanes on Tuesday and was immediately considered the frontrunner for the job after parting ways with Georgia last week. The University of Miami is hoping that Richt cannot only develop certain players to play at the next level, but to restore Miami to the powerhouse program that it was in the 1980’s and early-2000’s.
“I can’t wait to get started”, Richt said.

It has not yet been officially announced, as Richt and UM are working out the details, according to sources.
