Mark Richt’s best and worst games at Georgia

McGarity and university president Jere Morehead have offered Richt an undefined role in the athletic department, but the 55-year-old coach isn’t committing to anything past his final time on the sideline.

As for who will take over at Georgia now that Mark Richt is gone, there are a bevy of options.

The University of Georgia, by making its decision to fire Mark Richt, has once again proved it might be the most delusional, overrated program in college football history.

When Dooley was asked what kind of coach he’d go looking for, he said he’d try to find someone like the man the Bulldogs just fired.

Richt had only a short statement in the announcement released by Georgia. I feel for him and his family but I know if decides to keep coaching he’s going to get a job here at any point he wants.

Richt also spoke with pride about the team’s strong finish. The Volunteers are on their fourth head coach since kicking Phillip Fulmer (74.3 winning percentage) to the curb in 2008, while Nebraska took a major step back this season after letting go of Bo Pelini (71.3 winning percentage).

I hope that we can live up to some of the expectations that people have been giving us over this summer, and I hope you get a chance to enjoy watching our season as it progresses. “I am deeply grateful for his many years of dedicated service to the University of Georgia, and I particularly appreciate the positive way he has represented UGA”. I know all UGA alumni and supporters will look forward to celebrating the successful conclusion of his coaching career at UGA in a bowl game later this year. There were reports Monday that Houston head coach Tom Herman was agreeing to a new contract with the Cougars, furthering speculation that Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is the leading candidate for the Bulldogs. Coach Richt played at Miami and spent 14 seasons as Bobby Bowden’s offensive coordinator at Florida State.

Georgia has not played for an SEC title since 2012, but Richt has managed to steer the team to season-ending Top 10 on seven occasions, including in 2014. Finishing behind Missouri twice and not taking advantage of the long slumber Tennessee seem to be in just doesn’t cut it, even if Georgia think of themselves as bigger than they actually are. The facilities and support of Georgia also allows it to win national championships and has weaker competition in the SEC.

Richt has led Georgia to two SEC Championships and led it to the title game five times.

As a UGA alumnus, he is probably high on the Bulldogs list to replace Richt. Other candidates include former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton and current San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich.

“That remains between Mark and myself”, said McGarity. If I was Anderson, Evans and Plank, I am doing all I can to get Richt to be the next head coach of the Terrapins.
