In addition, the BBC African footballer of the year described all five nominees as champions.

He gained more fans’ votes than Ayew, Sadio Mane, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Yacine Brahimi.

Past winners of the award include Christopher Katongo of Zambia (2012), Asamoah Gyan of Ghana (2010), Emanuel Adebayorof Togo in 2007 and El-Hadj Diouf of Senegal in 2002. Toure joins Jay Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu as the only two-time winners of the award.

In May, Ayew won the Marc-Vivien Foe award for the Best African Player in the Ligue 1 for the 2014-15 season during his time in France. For me to be the victor I am delighted and very happy.

Toure is also now a finalist for the 2015 CAF African Footballer of the Year.

The player was honoured after helping his national side to their first African Nations trophy in 23-years, when they defeated Ghana in the penalty shootout.

“I will continue to try to win a trophy every year, I will fight to win a personal trophy”, he said.

Former Barcelona midfielder Toure has won the award for a second time.

But Toure remains a powerful presence in the heart of the midfield and contributed seven goals for City in the calendar year.
