Nominees for the best actress in a TV series- drama also include Caitriona Balfe (‘Outlander’), Eva Green (‘Penny Dreadful’) and Robin Wright (‘House of Cards’).
And yet both studios are campaigning for the actresses in the supporting actress category, not in lead roles.
Cast member Michael Fassbender at the closing night premiere of the film “Steve Jobs” at the BFI London Film Festival in London, October 18, 2015. Whether or not that campaign strategy will backfire for the Oscars remains to be seen.
Actress America Ferrera announces nominations for the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards.
If that is the case, Todd Haynes’ “Carol”, about two women in love in 1950’s NY, is Oscar bound in many categories.
Not everything went well during the Globes’ Thursday announcement. Is it really a comedy? Its original shows Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle won nominations for Best Musical or Comedy Series.
“Carol” is up for best drama against Pioneer-era movie “The Revenant”, psychological thriller “Room”, Catholic Church abuse probe “Spotlight” and thriller “Mad Max: Fury Road”, a surprise contender in the category, which rarely sees a blockbuster action nominee.
Elba, Rylance, and Shannon seem like sure things for this race after receiving SAG and Golden Globes nods, while Stallone and Dano’s nods are crucial after having missed out on a SAG nomination.
USA Network’s cult conspiracy show “Mr. Robot” took the TV categories by storm with unexpected nominations for the show and actors Rami Malek and Christian Slater. SAG voters ignored it too.
“Carol”, the story of a married older lady who falls in love with a younger shopgirl in the Nineteen Fifties, garnered 5 nominations together with greatest drama film, director, rating and appearing nods for Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.
Will Smith, whose upcoming “Concussion” has drawn headlines for its depiction of head trauma in football, joined the best actor, drama, nominees.
Netflix is leading the charge in Golden Globe nominations, with HBO and Stars following at a close second. It has seven nominations, down from 15 a year ago.
Why even have categories in the first place?
SNUB: “Better Call Saul” Oddly, the Emmys’ only freshman nominee – AMC’s “Better Call Saul” – was also left out by HFPA (although star Bob Odenkirk landed a nom). Still, Ruffalo did get the nod for a nomination for his role in “Infinitely Polar Bear” as a bipolar father. For best supporting actress, Kate Winslet was nominated for “Steve Jobs”, as were Vikander for “Ex Machina”, Jennifer Jason Leigh for “The Hateful Eight”, Helen Mirren for “Trumbo”, and Jane Fonda for “Youth”.
Lady Gaga: The flashy, sassy “Poker Face” singer came up with a winning hand for her work on the gory “American Horror Story: Hotel”, earning her a surprise actress nod in a limited TV series. It’s classic Golden Globes to nominate her-since her attendance at the show will made headlines and bring in viewers.

The nominees for best actor in a TV comedy series: Aziz Ansari, “Master of None”; Gael Garcia Bernal, “Mozart in the Jungle”; Rob Lowe, “The Grinder”; Patrick Stewart, “Blunt Talk”; Jeffrey Tambor, “Transparent”. But true to its, shall we say, idiosyncratic reputation, the HFPA also prompted widespread headscratching by recognizing a number of shows that, while generally well-received, were not considered awards contenders. Fox, shut out last year, landed four nominations this year, as did ABC.
