Carol, The Big Short lead Golden Globe nominations

Its original shows Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle won nominations for Best Musical or Comedy Series. Then again, they entirely blew it by putting “The Martian” as a comedy/musical.

In December final yr, showbiz satire “Birdman” and coming-of-age film “Boyhood” have been already established as Oscar frontrunners.

Aside from Carol, the best drama nominees are The Revenant, Spotlight, Room, and Mad Max: Fury Road. “Til then, we’ve got a month to accept the Globes’ oddities for what they are: a double-edged sword with as much power to elevate underdogs as shut out the deserving”. Nods for its two stars, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, as well as for Haynes’ direction, lent a boost to the film’s growing Oscar outlook. There’s only one supporting actor and actress award for the entirety of television, which the Globes otherwise split into three categories: drama, comedy, and limited series or movie. But we don’t think anyone would consider them straight-up comedies like “Spy” or “Trainwreck”.

In the best foreign movie category, four European films and one from Latin America made the cut – “The Brand New Testament” (Belgium/France/Luxembourg), “The Club” (Chile), “The Fencer (Finland/Germany/Estonia), “Mustang” (France) and “Son of Saul” (Hungary)”. Scotland-set Outlander, too, got a more welcome lift, landing nominations both as a series and for lead Catriona Balfe.

We’ve had a lot of award show talk on the site as of late, but now we’re getting to the real big shows. His third time in the gig follows three straight years of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as hosts.

Alicia Vikander, the ubiquitous star of 2015, joined the best dramatic actress field for Tom Hooper’s transgender pioneer drama “The Danish Girl”, as well as the supporting actress one for her performance as an artificial intelligence in the sci-fi indie “Ex Machina”.

The Globes’ love affair with Steven Spielberg is burned with “Bridge.” David O. Russell, who has earned best director nominations in recent years for American Hustle and The Fighter, didn’t get a pick for Joy.

Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” also got left out in the cold.

Irish acting and film talent scored an impressive six nominations for next year’s Golden Globe Awards. Mark Ruffalo was nominated for another film, “Infinitely Polar Bear”, in which he plays a man with bipolar disorder.

The announcement of the Golden Globe nominations on Thursday morning did little to clarify the movie awards season.

But if Oscar forecasters are looking to sift through Globe tea leaves, there appear to be few sure things. This comes a week after both Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo were widely considered locks for the best supporting actor Oscar category (and Keaton a potential winner). The movies that are contenders for the best drama prize are “Carol”, “Spotlight”, “Room“, “The Revenant”, and “Mad Max: Fury Road”. Her Best Actress competition includes Brie Larson for “Room“, Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn“, as well as the duo from “Carol”.

“The Big Short”, which takes a quirky look at the housing bubble collapse that led to the 2008 USA recession, led the comedy nominees with four nods; best comedy, screenplay and actor for Christian Bale and Steve Carell.

Thankfully, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association nominated Lily Tomlin, age 76, for best actress, musical or comedy, for her ferociously amusing and poignant turn in “Grandma”, released earlier this year.
