Voges, Marsh hit tons as Australia make merry

Adam Voges hit an unbeaten 174 and Shaun Marsh 139 not out as Australia amassed 438-3 on the opening day of the three-Test series against West Indies.

Looking ahead to the second day, Warrican said more discipline is needed from the West Indies bowlers.

Voges, still in his first year of test cricket after making his debut against West Indies earlier this year at the age of 35, accumulated his career-high score off only 285 balls with 33 fours.

“It’s been a great day”, Voges stated.

“We were in a good position just before lunch”.

After winning the toss, Australia were 257 for 3 at tea, with Voges on 100 not out and Shaun Marsh on 42 not out.

Shaun Marsh was delighted after scoring his first century on home soil.

“I definitely feel comfortable at this level”.

“It has to start somewhere, we just have to be consistent in whatever we do”.

Skipper Steve Smith backed James Pattinson to deliver the “X-factor” as he makes his return to Test cricket leading Australia’s attack in the first Test against West Indies from Thursday.

“But you can’t look too much into a tour match there”.

“That Voges and Marsh partnership was very key as well”.

“I think once we start doing that we’ve shown in the past we can take 20 wickets”.

“I think some of the criticism has been a little unfair”.

Their remarkable partnership concluded on 449 runs after Marsh was caught slogging left arm spinner Jomel Warrican for 182.

Current West Indies coaches Phil Simmons (left) and Curtly Ambrose experienced the dominance of their side’s golden era first hand but now find themselves swimming against the tide.

They bowled just 50 overs in the first two sessions of play and needed to contact part-time spinners to get to 89 of the policy 90 overs under the threat of corrective action from the match referee Chris Broad.

Although Warrican was West Indies’ most risky bowler, paceman Shannon Gabriel bowled the best delivery of the day, a 147.2 kilometres per hour fizzer which went through the gate and removed Burns’s middle stump.

It was a big relief for Ramdin, who had dropped Warner in the second over from a tough chance off Kemar Roach, diving across first slip with his outstretched left glove. Although Shanon Gabriel bowled a beauty to get rid of Burns, runs kept coming for Australia as they went to lunch at 121/3 from 24 overs.

Steve Smith’s team are hot favourites to win the three-Test series in dominant style against the tourists.

And having batted at nearly five an over all day, they still have enough time for their bowlers to target the inexperienced West Indian batting.

Voges brought up his double-century from his 266th elivery with a single to deep point off Jason Holder, and in the next over Marsh moved to his 150 from his 227th ball with a single off Taylor, also to deep point.
