He says de Blasio’s plan is a step in the right direction.

“The MIH proposal in its present form leaves very little room for any community input in future projects as the affordability options will not be decided by communities”, Mr. Diaz’s letter said.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has officially signed the Department of Veterans’ Services law. Numerous city’s community boards and four out of five borough boards have voted against the plans. And critics have accused City Hall of fumbling the roll-out. “And I think when I explain it to people there’s a lot of receptivity”.

De Blasio has promised to end veteran homelessness and expand job opportunities for veterans. “We are not going to use the policies of the past that weren’t sufficient”.

“That goes against everything we believe in”, he said.

He is working with a handful of City Council members on revamped legislation that might limit the number of horses registered to work on city streets from 220 to just a few dozen, and would only allow carriage drivers to carry riders in Central Park, The New York Times reported. He touted three endorsements in recent days, from labor unions SEIU 32BJ, the Hotel Trades Council, and from the AARP, which represents senior citizens.

The administration wants to loosen zoning rules to encourage development. While developers will be required to build affordable units, residents question whether they will be affordable enough. But many skeptics remain.

“We are supposed to help every neighborhood become stronger”, the mayor said.

While the new department will initially cost the city an additional $335,000 a year, more funding will likely be necessary as the exact role of the agency is determined and needs are assessed.
