Film shockers and snubs — Golden Globes

Each received four nominations. In recent years, “Argo” and “12 Years a Slave” both won the best drama film Golden Globe and went on to win the best picture Oscar. Then again, they entirely blew it by putting “The Martian” as a comedy/musical. I know they are true devotees of the cinema and I can tell every time I speak with one of them how much they care about what they do.

Swedish actress Alicia Vikander had a big day.

Caitriona Balfe was nominated for a Golden Globe for best actress in a TV drama series for her role in “Outlander”, which was nominated for best drama.. Rylance scored nominations for his elegant spy turn in “Bridge of Spies” and his rich work in BBC TV’s miniseries “Wolf Hall”. We are absolutely thrilled to have our global comedy Spy and its unbelievable star Melissa McCarthy nominated. It was nearly a given that the film’s cast would be nominated for best ensemble.

Best television drama series nominations include HBO’s Game of Thrones and Netflix’s Narcos.

Brie Larson, best actress nominee for “Room”: “Wow”.

On the other hand, some films and performers were shut out of key categories. Traditional TV networks like the above mentioned NBC, ABC, and CBS, as well as FOX, have consistently lead the list of nominees over the years. There are plenty of viewers who will be pleased by the three nominations for “Outlander”, Ron Moore’s ambitious adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling romance novels.

Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” also got left out in the cold.

Tied with four is the Aaron Sorkin-scripted box-office disappointment “Steve Jobs”.

Timothy Gray, awards editor at industry magazine Variety, said the nominations reflected the cross-section of films in the running for this year’s prizes.

Upon hearing the news, Gaga did what any class act, fashionista vampire would do – she got super stoked via social media.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association may not have recognized stars like Ellie Kemper, Emma Roberts or Rachel McAdams for the superb acting in their respective roles-but the least we can do is honor their contributions to the world of style.

But if Oscar forecasters are looking to sift through Globe tea leaves, there appear to be few sure things.

But Joy, which was ignored by Wednesday’s SAG Awards nominations, might find a road to bigger riches hard.

So did Sylvester Stallone for “Creed”, giving him a nomination for the same character (Rocky Balboa) who first earned him his last Globe nomination in 1976 for “Rocky”. The Revenant is due for release December 25.

-Actor, Drama: Bryan Cranston, “Trumbo”; Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Revenant”; Michael Fassbender, “Steve Jobs”; Eddie Redmayne, “The Danish Girl”; Will Smith, “Concussion”. Mark Ruffalo is up for Best Actor in the Comedy Or Musical category, too – for his performance as a husband and father struggling profoundly with bipolar disorder in Infinitely Polar Bear. But instead, the Globes awarded the AARP slots in the category to Maggie Smith (“Lady in the Van”) and Lily Tomlin (“Grandma”). The film was also nominated for best screenplay and the movie’s director, Tom McCarthy, received a nod.

Apart from “Carol”, the other best motion picture drama nominees are “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Revenant”, harrowing kidnap tale “Room” and “Spotlight”, which recounts the Boston Globe’s investigation into sex abuse in the Catholic Church.

“Joanne Froggatt, best supporting actress nominee for “Downton Abbey”: “‘Downton Abbey’ and Anna Bates have been a big part of my life for some years now. “Casual”, on Hulu, shares the category with “Mozart in the Jungle” and “Transparent” (both on Amazon), “Orange is the New Black” (Netflix), and “Silicon Valley” and “Veep” (HBO).

SNUB: Blythe Danner, “I’ll See You in My Dreams” The scene where Danner gets high in this Sundance indie is hysterical enough for her to deserve recognition in the best actress in a comedy.

She apologized to her neighbors for the noise level in her apartment when she couldn’t even. And the film didn’t exactly wow critics.

The Globes’ tweets have since been deleted. Its nominations for best picture drama (over “Brooklyn”) and best director for George Miller shows that the Warner Bros. summer tentpole has staying power.
