The exchange was in response to a column Hopkins wrote about Trumps calls for all US Muslims to be forced to wear I.D badges and for a complete ban on Muslims entering the country.

Mr Trump also lost his honorary doctorate from the Robert Gordon University (RGU) after 70,000 people signed a petition demanding its removal.

“I think for weeks, you know you and everybody else were just bringing folks to hysterical laughter and all of that”, Clinton told the host.

Initially authorities said, despite the backlash, Trump would still meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on December 28.

Twitter users in turn were quick to remind Trump about some of the most famous athletes in US history, including Ali and Abdul-Jabbar, and they even posted photos of the presidential candidate posing with Ali.

Earlier this week, Mr Trump proposed a temporary halt on Muslims entering the United States.

Trump, who is leading in many polls to be the Republican presidential nominee, has defended his remarks about Muslims, citing the attack in San Bernardino, California, which was carried out by an Illinois-born man and his Pakistan-born wife.

He also said that there are “places in London so radicalised that police are afraid for their lives”.

Painting Trump as a “carnival barker” with “fake hair” whose campaign belonged in the “dustbin of history”, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Trump’s plan should disqualify him from office. “You want to control your own politician”.

Most GOP voters said they were not bothered by his remarks, though many said the comments could hurt his chances of becoming president.

But Zell, stressing that he was expressing his personal opinion, said it was all for the best that Trump had canceled.
