At his farewell press conference Monday in Athens, Richt was unsure of his next move – he said he may take time off from coaching – but said he looked forward to coaching in Georgia’s bowl game.

The University of Miami will have a press conference at 10 a.m. Friday at the Donna E. Shalala Center on campus “to introduce the 24th head football coach in school history”. The school made the announcement Thursday afternoon. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, as well as all other assistant coaches, will remain in their present roles with current responsibilities. Though they are bowl bound, the Bulldogs again missed out on the conference title game.

“Coach Richt embodies the competitiveness, the integrity, the passion, the abilities, and the experience to lead our young men to ACC and national championships and help them become men of character and success long after”, James said.

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher has rebuild the Seminoles in part by poaching some of the best players from the Miami area, including running back and Heisman Trophy candidate Dalvin Cook.

The University of Miami Director of Athletics Blake James announced on Friday the hiring of Hurricane alumnus Richt as the 24th head football coach at The U.

ESPN and the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart was Georgia’s selection.

Alabama can all but assure its spot in college football’s four-team playoff with a win Saturday over Florida in the SEC championship game. Smart had been in charge of the Crimson Tide defense since 2008.

“I was very thankful for the opportunity”. But it’s been a consistent message from Richt, who said something similar previous year in an interview about the PO Network.

From playing at the University of Miami to Bobby Bowden’s coordinator at FSU, Richt was hired at Georgia to bring some stability to the program and to win. He finished with a 145-51 record, which included two SEC titles. Interim coach Larry Scott went 4-1 to close the regular season and is expected to coach Miami in its bowl game, with that site and opponent set to be finalized Sunday.
