Life sciences’ new entry in Google’s Alphabet

In Collaboration With Verily NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., December 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -Â Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) today announced the formation of Verb Surgical Inc., an independent surgical solutions company, in collaboration with Verily Life Sciences LLC (formerly Google Life Sciences). Through Ethicon’s surgical technologies and solutions including sutures, staplers, energy devices, trocars and hemostats and our commitment to treating serious medical conditions like obesity and cancer worldwide, we deliver innovation to make a life- changing impact. But Verb Surgical wants to go one better. This technology is being developed by Ethicon, which has a background in minimally invasive surgery and advanced instrumentation. “In the coming years, Verb aims to develop a comprehensive surgical solutions platform that will incorporate leading-edge robotic capabilities and best-in-class medical device technology for operating room professionals”, the press release reads.

Verb’s platform of surgery will consist of both robotic facilities and medical device technology, as it will be working on the systems’ development with the help of surgeons and hospitals.

With financial and intellectual property investments from all of these companies – Google, Verily, Johnson & Johnson and Ethicon, Verb surgical should have no problem in putting their plans in action.

The company will be located in Mountain View, California.

Johnson & Johnson and the life-sciences division of Google Inc. on Thursday named a veteran medical-equipment executive to lead their joint venture to development robots that will assist in surgery.

Verb’s robot will be about 20 percent the size, allow the surgeon to work closer to the patient and likely be considerably less expensive than current systems, which can cost $2 million or more, he said.

The venture, which will be called Verb Surgical Inc., is the latest partnership between the California tech giant and the health-care industry, after earlier collaborations with Biogen Inc., Novartis AG and Sanofi. J&J, however, said it appointed Scott Huennekens as president and CEO of the new company.

A company spokeswoman from Verily explained that Verb Surgical has already recruited over a hundred people for the initial launch, a number that will continue to grow.
