Police are sharing more information about the Arkansas State University gunman’s alarming Facebook post.

Investigators released 911 tapes where Bartelt could be heard talking to operators.

Elliott said at a Thursday news conference that Bartelt never pointed a weapon toward officers.

After a period of negotiations, Bartelt was arrested without incident shortly after 2:45 p.m. Thursday.

Bartelt was charged with first-degree terroristic threatening, aggravated assault, criminal possession of an explosive device and carrying a firearm in a publicly owned facility.

The judge denied Bartelt’s request to be represented by a public defender in the case.

A January 29 hearing is set in Craighead County Circuit Court.

While going through Bartelt’s home, his girlfriend was arrested. Four “large hunting knives” and a box containing ammunition for shotguns and “several”.

“He desired to do harm to himself”, Elliott said.

When police arrived at the university campus Thursday, Elliott said Bartelt was sitting in the truck with his foot out the window, yelling.

The report said Bartelt told an officer Thursday that he wanted to shoot people at the university but “realized murder would be wrong, so he was going to kill himself”.

“He also stated that he was seeing demons in the woods around his house and had tried to photograph them, but was not able to get their pictures”, the report said. While speaking with negotiators, he waved his gun and threatened to shoot the propane tank, the report said.

The man accused of causing a lockdown at Arkansas State University has his first court appearance set for Friday afternoon.

Police said the 47-year-old man, would also occasionally put gasoline on the truck and did not threaten officers, the AP said.

Bartelt would at times get out of his truck and wave a 12-gauge shotgun around in “various directions” on campus, according to the report.

Bartelt was later taken into custody without any shots being fired.
