Windies collapse to innings defeat

Bravo had his furniture rearranged by Pattinson, and the 25-year-old – playing his first Test since March 2014 – got one to lift at Marlon Samuels and loop off the shoulder of the bat to David Warner at gully, before bowling Jermaine Blackwood next ball to leave the Windies 24 for four from eight overs.

Man-of-the-match Voges, meanwhile, was thrilled to have made a match-winning contribution and insisted there was no sense of frustration after he and Marsh fell just two runs short of Donald Bradman and Bill Ponsford’s record stand of 451 for Australia.

Hazlewood (4-45) took the lead as the hosts wrapped up West Indies’ innings with only 16 runs added to their overnight tally of 207-6 on a chilly morning in Tasmania.

Australia won by an innings and 212 runs before tea on the third day – their second-biggest win over the Windies in test history. Pattinson’s haul included the second-innings wicket of Bravo for four, ensuring the West Indies batsman was dismissed twice in 37 minutes.

“That was a good win, we fought back after being three for 120”, he said.

That left Brathwaite to bat with the tail and he stepped up his scoring rate, hitting Lyon for four and six before moving to his half-century with another four off the spinner. “We had a quiet beer last night and tapped each other on the shoulder and said ‘well done, mate'”.

The West Australian pair posted the all-time highest partnership for the fourth-wicket of 449, eclipsing the 437 held by Sri Lankan pair Thilan Samaraweera and Mahela Jayawardene against Pakistan in 2009.

“I landed on it yesterday and aggravated it a little bit as well as some hip flexor soreness in my right leg. They might be related, but there’s a little bit soreness, so I am going to sit out the first Big Bash League games, unfortunately”.

In the end it was awful loss for the West Indies, lit up only by the batting performances of Bravo and Brathwaite. “The spirit in the dressing room is still there, we had a few one-day series and then we had first-class cricket back home where players did well”, he said.

“Him and Voges certainly changed the course of the game”.

Australia captain Steve Smith said there was talent in the young Windies team which needed time. “Hopefully we can come back strong in the second test”.

The second Test begins on Boxing Day (December 26) in Melbourne.

“We were pretty indisciplined in the first session of the test match and that carried on for the rest of the first day”.

Australia announced that Usman Khawaja had been recalled to the Australian squad for the remaining two tests, while all-rounder Steve O’Keefe will join an extended 14-man squad for the third test beginning January 3 in Sydney.
