The Congress has claimed the case is a result of political vendetta although, as finance minister Arun Jaitley pointed out in a Facebook post, the Gandhis and others involved are not being investigated by any government agency. The Enforcement Directorate has not issued any notice to them. The Congress leaders are seen defending the indefensible as Sonia and Rahul have been summoned by the trial court after the Delhi high court quashed their petition to cancel it. “India has never accepted the diktat that the queen is not answerable to the law”, he said.

The Telegraph quoted Congress party sources as saying that Rahul would not seek bail as he is “convinced” that the Narendra Modi-led government “plotted” the legal trouble for his mother and himself. Jaitley argued that a political party collect funds for its political activities gets an Income Tax exemption. “They have created huge taxable income in favour of the second company”, he said.

At a strategy meeting on December 9 chaired by Sonia Gandhi, party leaders resolved to escalate the issue and fight it out both legally and politically. Laying the political line for his ranks to attack the Congress, the PM said frequent disruption of Parliament was anti-poor. “Is that a charge against the Courts?”, he asked.
