Merkel named Time magazine’s 2015 ‘Person of the Year’
Merkel was also praised for her part to play in Europe’s ongoing crisis over migration and how she dealt with the revelations of Greece’s crippling debt.

In an essay on its website, Managing Editor Nancy Gibbs celebrated Merkel’s steady, guided leadership during this year’s succession of emergencies on the European continent: the possibility of Greek bankruptcy, Russian aggression in the Ukraine, the refugee crisis and, finally, the terrorist attacks in Paris. However, because of her handling on both crises, Merkel, emerged as an “indispensable player” in the EU, Gibbs claimed.
“I told you (at)TIME Magazine would never pick me as person of the year despite being the big favourite”, he tweeted soon after Time’s announcement. The Time depicted her ten years of rule as ‘resolutely dull’.
On December 9, 2015 German Chancellor Angela Merkel was named Times Person of the Year by Times Magazine.
The 61-year-old is only the fourth woman since 1927 to be chosen and the first since opposition leader Corazon C.Aquino of the Philippines in 1986.
But contrary to what Trump is saying and according to many political analysts, Angela Merkel is taking the world of politics by storm. Times described Merkel as the “Chancellor of the Free World”.
It is said that Merkel was using “the politics of baby steps'”.
“Her response to that was extraordinary, and a lot of people say out of character, but really tectonic”, Vick said.
The other candidates for 2015 were Caitlyn Jenner, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, the Black Lives Matter protest movement, ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Uber CEO Travis Kalanick.
