How The Star Wars Standalone Films Will Be Different, According To Kathleen

It is already confirmed that the direct sequels to Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be directed by Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow.

“The Force Awakens” will be released in theaters across the US on December 18.

Kennedy further clarified that while they do want the Star Wars Expanded Universe to be as connected as they can be, considering the idea was created with having the flicks occur in the same universe.

While it might seem a little absurd that Star Wars branding has now extended to condoms, it makes sense when you consider how central the Vader/Luke plot line is to the entire franchise – starting with the secret wedding of Anakin Skywalker to Padmé Amidala on Naboo in 2002’s “Attack of the Clones“.

Kennedy went on to explain that, while Rogue One and 2018’s young Han Solo film are clearly prequels to the existing movies, this wouldn’t always be the case.

At the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington where he was being honored for his achievements in arts and culture, Lucas told Vulture, “I think the fans are going to love it. It’s very much the kind of movie they’ve been looking for”. And to be perfectly honest, we have changed the order of those at the last minute, so that’s not the intention at all. Now the Star Wars Anthology: Han Solo Movie will be the second spinoff, with Phil Lord and Chris Miller at the helm, and a May 25, 2018 release date in place.

In an interview with Slashfilm, Kennedy revealed that the filmmakers involved would have the freedom to explore different genres and styles, separate from the established feel of the Saga movies. She also said that they can take place “anywhere on the timeline” – meaning the distant past or even the far future – and that “there is no strict guidelines for what we’re doing”.

File this under “things that will tempt you to waste lots of time at your desk”. I really want some original stories. We do have one advantage though, at least Michael Bay isn’t in charge or this new movie… We may very well never see this game ever again.
