The Hollywood Foreign Press has announced the list of contenders for the 73 annual Golden Globe Awards on December 10.
“Instead we see “Room” and ‘Spotlight, ‘ little indie movies, and that is sending a strong message to Hollywood that measurement does not matter they usually might should attempt more durable”. While the film categories saw a good mix of nominees from major and independent film studios, the television groups saw a noticeable lack of nominees from major television networks like NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX, nominees that usually dominate the awards season.
Tom McCarthy, best director, screenplay and best film nominee for “Spotlight”: “The best picture nomination really speaks to everyone’s work”.
The Globe nominations conclude the first wave of selections for “awards season”, which included Wednesday’s SAG Awards nominations, Monday’s Grammy nominations and releases of critics’ and organizations’ best-of lists. They are: “The Big Short”, “Joy”, “Cinderella”, “The Martian”, “Spy”, “Trainwreck”.
HBO’s TV series nominees include Silicon Valley and Game of Thrones, which received only one nomination each, while Veep got two.
The Golden Globe winners can be introduced at a televised ceremony in Los Angeles on January 10, hosted by comic Ricky Gervais.
Monaghan actress Caitriona Balfe also garnered a nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series (Drama) for her role in “Outlander”, as did Eva Green for “Penny Dreadful”, which is filmed in Ireland.
In-demand Fassbender is in the running for Best Performance by an actor in a Motion Picture for his performance in “Steve Jobs”.
Leading the Golden Globe nominees this year with five, including one for best dramatic picture, was Todd Haynes’ 1950s style romance “Carol”.
-Supporting Actress: Jane Fonda, “Youth”; Jennifer Jason Leigh, “The Hateful Eight”; Helen Mirren, “Trumbo”; Alicia Vikander, “Ex Machina”; Kate Winslet, “Steve Jobs”.
Besides those three, the only star who get a double nomination is Alicia Vikander.
Amazon AMZN “s critically acclaimed series Transparent received recognition from both the HFPA and SAG”.
-Animated Film: “Anomalisa”, “The Good Dinosaur”, “Inside Out”, “The Peanuts Movie,” “Shaun the Sheep Movie”. Unlike the Emmys, the Globes actually like to nominate freshmen series and these veterans were shoved aside to make way for newer, buzzier, fare like USA’s “Mr. Robot” and Netflix’s “Narcos”.
Best actor in a TV series- comedy nods are Indian-American Aziz Ansari (‘Master of None’), Gael Garcia Bernal (‘Mozart in the Jungle’), Rob Lowe (‘The Grinder’), Patrick Stewart (‘Blunt Talk’) and Jeffrey Tambor (‘Transparent’).
