Hail Mary Gives Packers Win

Water cooler talk has never been easier as we await the weekend.

“We were convinced we were going to win the game”.

Rodgers threw a 61-yard touchdown pass with no time left to Richard Rodgers – who caught the ball amid surprisingly little resistance from the Detroit defenders – and the Lions fell to the Packers 27-23 on Thursday night.

To most of us, the Green Bay Packers final play in their 27-23 come-from-behind win over the Detroit Lions is referred to as a “Hail Mary”.

It’s planning. Strategy. Practice (something the Packers reportedly do with their Hail Mary play every Saturday).

Just as everybody had drawn it up, right? Officials called Taylor for a penalty, giving the Packers one more shot at the end zone. The fumble of James Starks had that bounced in the end zone resulted in Randall Cobb being there at the right moment falling on the ball scoring a touchdown for the Packers. The answer, unsurprisingly, lies somewhere in the middle. The Play is a big thing for me. “I think, when you watch the play live, I was just like everybody else – you thought, ‘That’s a facemask.’ Then you see the replay, and it’s a lot closer than it initially seemed”. It gives guys a chance to fight for position.

Even then, the Lions made a decision to rush only three, which allowed Aaron Rodgers to scramble around, buying time for his receivers to get down the field. “It was one of the turning points in the game”, Peppers said. There was no insane bounce, no pile of players fighting over the ball while falling to the ground.

The Lions, fearing the Packers would start lateraling and force Detroit to make a tackle, did not put 6-foot-5 Calvin Johnson in the game for defensive purposes.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (12) celebrates with teammates after defeating the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. That’s too long for a Hail Mary, so they attempted a wild lateral-filled scamper toward the end zone.

“Defensively, it’s sort of the reverse of that”.

“(Tight end Richard Rodgers) chose to jump. Rodgers threw a pass to Jared Abbrederis, which could have been called pass interference.

“All I saw was the dude catching the ball”, cornerback Darius Slay said. It looked like the two teams would continue heading in opposite directions until the Packers’ offence woke up in the second half with Rodgers tossing two touchdowns and running one in himself before the Hail Mary. I knid of saw the same thing. “He was like ‘we’ve got to go forward, there’s no time left we’ve got to do something.’ So, it worked out in our favor, I guess”, said Richard Rodgers. “That’s another element of the play”.
