Alabama’s Derrick Henry listed as enormous favorite for Heisman Trophy

But Watson doesn’t deserve to be a Heisman finalist simply because of that; Watson deserves to be a Heisman finalist because he’s one of the most outstanding players in college football.

Now Deshaun Watson has one for the road.

Watson, who is Clemson’s first Heisman finalist, averaged 331 yards of total offense to lead Clemson to a 13-0 record, including three wins over top 10 teams, and a No. 1 national ranking.

Oh, and did I mention Watson has done all of this coming off of ACL surgery last December?

Watson is the second Gainesville High graduate to be a Heisman Trophy finalist.

There’s no question how dominating Deshaun Watson has been this season and he deserves the honor of being called the best player in the nation and receiving the Heisman Trophy.

“He’s had a phenomenal season, and he deserves every accolade that anyone could ever throw his way”, said Alabama Coach Nick Saban, who doesn’t effuse just to effuse.

The Alabama running back grew up about 30 miles from Tebow’s hometown of Jacksonville as a passionate Florida Gators fan, especially during the years Tebow anchored the championship team. That is almost 2,000 yards! Watson will look to be the 6th straight quarterback to win the award since 2009 when running back Mark Ingram (Alabama) took home the award.

Now, most years, there’s one candidate who appears to be above the rest, but this year’s Heisman vote could be one of the closest in recent history.

Case Against: Henry is powerful but lacks breakaway speed like Heisman winning RB’s before him.

— BEST GAME: Henry outshined LSUs Leonard Fournette in a game that gave Alabama the inside track to the SEC West title.

The Skinny: Stanford head coach David Shaw is admittedly biased, but he has a strong stance about his running back, Christian McCaffrey.

Henry led the nation in rushing (1,986) and scored 23 touchdowns despite playing in an offense with an inconsistent passing attack. The Stanford running back toppling Barry Sanders’ FBS record of all-purpose yards was nothing short of incredible.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) – Derrick Henry made a quick impression on his Alabama teammates upon arriving on campus as a coveted prospect with everything from his hardcore weight room workouts to those middle-of-the-night pushup sessions.

The best part about this Heisman race is that, unlike years past, there’s no runaway favorite.

The Heisman selection show is certainly a gaudy, exasperating affair for viewers, but it means the world to the players selected to attend.
