According to an InvestorPlace report, Chipotle Mexican Grill’s stocks have been significantly hammered since the last two months when the outbreak of E. Coli started.
At first the E. Coli outbreak at our beloved Chioptle seemed like a temporary scare-something that would pass quickly and allow us to eat our delicious burritos once more-especially when spokespeople for the restaurant insisted there was nothing to worry about. Chipotle founder and co-CEO Steve Ells issued an apology for the incidents of infection related to the food chain. The company is now suffering a major blow to its reputation as different locations have been associated with virus outbreaks. The company’s restaurants in Minnesota sickened about 70 customers the following month.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in its latest count cited 52 cases of E. coli in nine states, the majority of which were reported in Washington and Oregon.
The Boston Public Health Commission is now certain of the illness that caused 136 people to become ill in a short space of time. In many cases, the illness turns out to be fatal as well. The Denver headquartered company said that it is working hard to solve the issue, but Chipotle doesn’t have definitive “yes” to question: Whether it’s safe to eat at the company’s restaurant. Now earlier this week, Boston College announced that more than 140 of its students fell ill after eating at the company’s restaurants. It has used terms like “sustainable”, “added hormone-free”, “organic”, “naturally raised” and “unprocessed” in its marketing materials.

Just hours after Chipotle Mexican Grill’s CEO Steven Ells pledged to become a food safety leader in the fast food industry, yet another restaurant in Seattle was shut down by health inspectors for multiple “food safety violations”. The Food Chain report said this is according to the CDC which began tracking food-borne illnesses in 2009. “There will be robust testing procedures that will need to be in place for all of our suppliers, whether large or small”, he said in a presentation in NY. After running tests, they discovered it was norovirus and not E. coli, as previously thought.
