Derrick Henry’s Name Gets Put On The Heisman Trophy
He beat Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey with 1,832 points.

Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson came in third. Stanford running back Toby Gerhart gained over 1800 yards and had 28 touchdowns in 2009.
This Nov. 14, 2015, shows Alabama running back Derrick Henry (2) looking across the field for any Mississippi State defenders on his way to a 65-yard touchdown during the second half of an NCAA college football game in Starkville, Miss.
Henry leads the nation in total rushing yards (1,986) and is second in rushing yards per game (152.8).
McCaffrey grew up in Colorado with a family full of former student-athletes, including aunts and uncles, his brother and his parents. He is just the fourth player in college football history win all four awards in the same season and the first since Ron Dayne accomplished the feat at Wisconsin in 1999.
“We never pushed him into playing any sports”. Among the lessons he learned from his father was to do everything at 100 percent.
“I don’t see why not”, his middle school coach and longtime mentor, J.T. Medley, said. “Henry is a great back but he is part of a great team and system”. This time around, everyone will be watching – the excuse that he plays for Stanford in the Pacific time zone won’t fly.
“This is like a dream of mine”, Henry said. “I just want to make the school and all the fans proud”.
The Heisman trophy ceremony turned unexpectedly emotional on Saturday with the induction of Alabama’s Derrick Henry on Saturday night. Against a historically-stiff defensed conference, running for almost 2,000 yards in 13 games is quite the feat, especially when it’s compared to the other record. He even jumped in as a cornerback on the scout team during one practice and “looked like a natural”, Shaw said. Many voters listen to what the media says and go exclusively off of what they determine. And, regardless of who you happen to be cheering for, the victor should come as no surprise.
Not only is it relevant to acknowledge how McCaffrey can pick up yardage in a variety of ways and that he has successfully done so over the entirety of the season, but he has found success despite being Stanford’s only real option on offense. Shaw said, “It’s like, ‘Wow, that’s what we’ve been missing'”. “We didn’t ask him to play football”, Ed McCaffrey said.
His first breakout performance came on October 15 against UCLA.
“I went on Twitter and and there were a lot of of famous people reaching out to me”. It was a unusual 2015 Heisman season with three candidates coming from out of the blue, but the 2016 race should be loaded from the very start.
In the 118th Big Game against Cal, McCaffrey continued to break records. “Stanford won the Pac-12 title”.
“McCaffrey, by contrast, broke Barry Sanders” 27-year-old record with 3,496 all-purpose yards. He gave them 289 yards through the air and 131 on the ground, with five total touchdowns, and did it all with his signature ease. McCaffrey scored a rushing, passing and receiving touchdown in the game.
To me, Derrick Henry is the most outstanding player in college football this season though. Considering QB Kevin Hogan is gone along with four NFL-caliber starters up front, if McCaffrey can take home the hardware, he’ll have more than earned it. 5.
