States Expanded Gun Rights After Sandy Hook School Massacre

Today marks the third anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton Conneticut.

Orange is the color embraced by the gun violence prevention movement, and Sunday’s orange event was to remember those who died and to honor survivors.

“We are on board with the second amendment, but we do believe that there are some issues that need to be shored up if you will to reduce the amount of gun violence we are seeing”, stated Emily Sullivan with Moms Demand Action. He began his attack by killing his mother at their home and ended it by turning his gun on himself.

More than 100 people filled the grounds at the Texas Capitol in support of ending gun violence. Reverend John Elford is a Pastor for the University United Methodist Church “On their behalf (the victims) we must say that in a culture that fetishizes guns where there’s virtually unrestrained and unregulated access to firearms, there is much that can be done”, he said.

U.S. drones killed thousands of people including children since Obama took command of the USA military, according the Bureau of Investigative Journalism. After Newtown, national organizations like Everytown USA and Moms Demand Action became more visible.

Manifested through acts big and small, like donating food and blankets to the homeless, it’s been an annual tradition at Notre Dame these past three years.

Brooks, a retired elementary schoolteacher, said she was distressed about gun violence after the Columbine shootings and later middle school shootings, but didn’t get involved until three years ago. The group started anti-gun violence rallies across the Unites States, including one Sunday in Austin.

“We’re just going to be there for one another this year”. “This is a reality that we’re still struggling with, and a struggle to develop a sense of positivity about the future. If we stand together we know we can end gun violence”.

The worst of the lot was Kansas, which passed a slew of new laws this year, the most controversial being the “constitutional carry” bill allows people to carry a concealed gun without a permit or proper training.

The trend has been discouraging to some gun-control advocates, even as other states have adopted stricter background checks.

The mayor, Austin’s Steve Adler, said people on no-fly lists and some people with mental illness should not be able to obtain guns. Moms are sending a clear message that we will be there each and every time a gun lobbyist attempts to pick apart important gun laws that protect our families and communities.
