Today is the first time the anniversary of the massacre has fallen on a school day. An interfaith community service at a Newtown church Monday evening is expected to include prayers, music and the lighting of candles.
Recent mass shootings at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado, a community college in OR and a church in SC have also reignited passions on both sides.
Participants said along with commemorating the anniversary, they wanted to honor all survivors and victims of gun violence and call on our nation’s leaders to act.
“Newtown wants just Newtown on this very day”, said Erardi, who became superintendent this past year.
Two hundred people walked down that path as they gathered at the recreational facility for an event organized by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America to commemorate the tragedy, which occurred three years ago Monday.
Police said there will be an increased presence at Newtown school on Monday.
“They understand something bad happened at this time of year – they associate it with the season – but we’ve decided as a family we are going to send them to school”, he said.
The tragedy unfolded shortly after school opened on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012.
Though some believe the solution is to enact tighter legislation on who can and can’t own a gun, others believe that would only prevent citizens from defending themselves or stopping shooters from enacting a massacre.
A threat Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, led to the evacuation of the new Sandy Hook Elementary School in Monroe.
The NRA’s argument: Following Sandy Hook, the NRA’s Executive Vice President, Wayne LaPierre, summarized the association’s stance on mass shootings in a press conference. They have been located for the last 25 years in this nondescript building less than three miles from Sandy Hook.
CT continues to lead the fight for gun control. The aspects of the gun laws that were being targeted for change dealt with making background checks universal, limiting the carrying capacity of magazines and clips, and the banning of assault rifles.

The principals at the high school and middle school will note the day’s significance in remarks over public address systems before the daily moments of silence, but staff at lower-grade schools only will offer parents, if requested, talking points on how to discuss the shootings with their children.
