Apple officially announces new iPod Touch models and colors

The new chip provides 10 times faster graphics performance for a more immersive gaming experience. It also has a software update that enables Apple Music, a $10-a-month service that offers unlimited playback of millions of songs. This represents the first major upgrade for the iPod Touch since 2012.

Still, I’d argue that the iPod and dedicated music players like it still have a few niche audiences to serve. Part of the reason why so many people wanted an iPod touch with more storage is because of the demise of the iPod Classic.

However, the iPod touch is still lacking the much anticipated Touch ID sensor, as Apple looks to keep it limited to the iPhones and the new line of iPads. At $199, it’s definitely still a serious investment, but a lower-risk one if you want to see if your kid can handle a high-tech possession. Maybe Apple was thinking that it’d be great for kids, or maybe Apple was thinking that we were all too clumsy to hold the iPod touch’s body because it’s just so thin.

The service is betting big on celebrity names to draw attention and scored a coup when pop superstar Taylor Swift agreed, after a heated dispute, to stream her blockbuster album “1989” only on Apple Music. The new models lack the loop accessory found on the previous generation, however the convenient media player still has a 6.1-millimeter thick outline with a 4-inch Retina show.

Certainly, we are long past the glory days of the iPod, but the device still has a number of uses to the right individuals.

Overall, it’s a solid update.

So far the buzz about the new iPod touch seems quite positive over in the Apple subreddit. The iPod touch, essentially an iPhone without the costs or benefits of cellular network connections, had a starting price of $199. In June the 1,000,000th iPod is sold. While that is a bold claim, compared to the old iPod touch, the new iPod touch 6th generation delivers an impressive mix of features and specs – including some it shares with the iPhone 6.

Apple’s contactless payment system Apple Pay was launched in the United Kingdom on Tuesday, allowing iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch owners to make payments and travel around London’s Tube, rail and bus networks using their devices.
