GST logjam: Arun Jaitley invokes Nehru, reminds Congress of responsibility of MPs

“We have made a decision to meet again. They only want to delay the bill”, said a senior minister.

Irked by Swamy, Congress lawmakers have accused Modi’s government of waging a “political vendetta” against the Gandhis.

Naidu at the same time said that he was “still hopeful” that the public opinion will prevail and “my friends in Congress” will “realize” that the House should run, debate and pass bills.

“Congress party is on one side stalling the proceedings of both the houses of parliament and on the other side Rahul Gandhi is making baseless allegations”. But Mr Jaitley dropped enough hints that the Congress was not keen on allowing passage of the GST Bill, as he expressed his fear that there would be a “washout” of the Winter Session as had happened in case of the Monsoon Session. Jaitley, in a terse Facebook post, said the “current session of Parliament is also threatened with a washout”.

Azad was alluding to a blog titled “Pt Nehru and Parliament” written by Jaitley where he had referred to the GST legislation, and “how the nation was waiting for the Parliament to legislate and approve a historic Constitution amendment enabling the GST”. “All this is being indefinitely delayed”, Jaitley lamented in his post.

Jaitley threw the Congress a dare: “Those who claim the legacy of Panditji must ask themselves the question, what kind of history they are making”.

In a two pronged strategy, the Congress duo have for the first time perhaps moving the party in tandem with the state governments they hold.

As it is, the Congress has found a supporter in Mamata Banerjee even if she is playing her own game of keeping the Congress away from a possible alliance with the Left in West Bengal before next year’s assembly elections.

“Engagement between central government and opposition can not be restricted to one issue”. “The fact that both the Congress president and vice-president have not moved the Supreme Court for an exemption from personal appearance is a legal issue and their legal advisers will look into it”, Mr. Kamal Nath told The Hindu. “The Rajya Sabha was disturbed because ruling Akali Dal leaders cut off the hands and legs of a Dalit man… girl is raped – should we seek the government’s permission to raise these issues?”

Meanwhile, Congress’s RS Surjewala compared global fuel prices and retail prices to say “with this track record of government.how can we believe, they will profit their coffers by taxing people, without putting a constitutional cap on GST”, He said when the worldwide oil prices have fallen to $36 per barrel and refinery price of petrol is only just Rs.23.70 per litre, it is sold at Rs.60.48 per litre (in Delhi).
