Android Pay adds in-app purchasing feature, catches up to Apple Pay

You can also use it to pay for your grocery delivery from the Instacart Android app or clothes from JackThreads. While not all apps will support Android Pay as a payment option right away, the list of compatible apps will grow over the next few months, and certain apps like OpenTable and Lyft are already supported and offering special promotional discounts for users for a limited time, with Lyft giving users $10 off rides for using Android Pay (likely for just the first time you use Android Pay) while OpenTable is letting people save $20 on their dining expenses.

Google said in September that it was working with various developers to add a “Buy with Android Pay” to their apps, so you could tap that button to swiftly checkout instead of entering your credit card and shipping address each time you make a purchase.

While Android Pay and Samsung Pay have always been stragglers, it seems they’re doing their best to catch up. Android’s payment platform was essentially a rebranded version of Google Wallet’s original form, allowing users to make payments in select brick-and-mortar stores by tapping their phones to check-out terminals using near field communications (NFC). Android Pay: Which apps support in-app purchases?

While Android Pay now supports making in-app payments in the United States, developers will need to update their apps to support the new feature.

It’s not clear when Google will launch its mobile wallet in the UK.

However, Google did announce plans to roll out the service to other countries, starting with Australia “in the first half of 2016”.

Similar to Apple Pay, Android Pay in apps is created to solve one of the larger challenges with shopping on mobile – having to enter your personal and payment data on your mobile device’s small screen. Google says residents of more countries around the world will get to experience Android Pay’s “simplicity and security” next year. For example, Lyft will give you $10 off if you pay with Android Pay.
