Jayalalithaa seeks Rs.10250 crore for rehabilitation
For the houses of families which suffered extensive damage but does not require relocation, Jayalalithaa asked Modi to make a special allocation of Rs 750 crore for 50,000 houses at the rate of Rs 1.50 lakh per house as Central grant. Besides, one lakh more houses were needed for those living in hutments in rural areas in Cuddalore, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Tuticorin districts under Indira Awaas Yojana. University examinations have already been postponed by the Government.

“Their life has been completely disrupted in the last few weeks and they were unable to concentrate and study for the examination”, she said.
In a message to the people of the state, Jayalalithaa said, “I will always stand by you [and there is] no need for any concern”.
For the 25,000 families residing in the vicinity of other water courses and water bodies in Chennai city and its suburbs, the State government had prepared a project to build 50,000 multi-storeyed tenements.
The Centre’s announcement came after she made a plea to Prime Minister Narendra Modi here last week, seeking that the floods be declared as National Disaster, she said.
“It is very essential that a special programme is approved for construction of houses with substantial enhanced Government of India contribution”, she said.
As many as 347 persons have died in Tamil Nadu in various rain-related incidents since October while about 17.64 lakh people were rescued and sheltered in 6605 relief centres across the state, according to the state government.

Union urban development minister M. Venkaiah Naidu, who is on a two-day visit to Chennai to get a first hand account on the impact of floods, called on chief minister J. Jayalalithaa at the Secretariat in Chennai.
