Outlander or Narcos? The 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards are exciting!

The best and worst thing about the Golden Globe nominations every year is that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association swerves wildly from what people might expect from awards season. In recent years, “Argo” and “12 Years a Slave” both won the best drama film Golden Globe and went on to win the best picture Oscar.

“Today they are turning out to be one of the most exciting places on television”.

Interestingly, the “Best TV series, comedy” category has basically been taken over by streaming services this year, with the nominees made up of Orange is the New Black, Silicon Valley, Transparent, Veep, Casual and Mozart in the Jungle. CBS Corp CBS -owned Showtime Networks got both ensemble and individual actor recognition for many of its series including Homeland, Nurse Jackie, The Affair, Penny Dreadful, and Shameless.

The nominations also saw “The Big Short“, Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer “The Revenant” and Danny Boyle’s “Steve Jobs” garner four nominations each. Carol, the romantic drama film directed by Todd Haynes is leading the board. There are plenty of viewers who will be pleased by the three nominations for “Outlander”, Ron Moore’s ambitious adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling romance novels. In totality, the streaming service giant earned nine Global Globe nominations, among which one was in a film category – the first time for Netflix.

The nominees for best foreign language film are: “The Brand New Testament, ” “The Club, ” “The Fencer, ” Mustang, ” and “Son of Saul”.

Lady Gaga and Alicia Vikander reacted with shock to their Golden Globe nominations Thursday.

“Room”, based on a mother and her young child held in captivity, also picked up a nomination for Best Motion Picture in a Drama and writer Emma Donoghue got the nod for Best Screenplay in a Drama.

The 29-year-old American singer is up for Best Actress in a TV Movie or Limited Series for American Horror Story: Hotel, while Vikander, the 27-year-old Swedish actress, is nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama for The Danish Girl and Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for Ex Machina.

The nominees in the best original score are Carter Burwell for “Carol”, Alexandre Desplat for “The Danish Girl”, Ennio Morricone for “The Hateful Eight”, Daniel Pemberton for “Steve Jobs”, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto for “The Revenant”.

And this category often predicts the nominees for Oscar’s best picture. Although “The Big Short” is clearly popular, it’s easy to see “The Martian” taking the Golden Globe, if only for its sheer likability.

Idris Elba received a Supporting Actor in a Feature Film nomination for Netflix’s Beast of No Nation, and also earned a nom for his role in the BBC TV series, Luther.

The 2016 Golden Globes, hosted by Ricky Gervais, will air on January 10, on NBC.

In other film news of geeky interest, The Martian received a nominee for best motion picture in a comedy/musical.

After the Screen Actors Guild Awards passed over Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo on Wednesday, the Globes did, too. Now it’s up for three big awards (best drama, actress and supporting actor) for the second half of its first season. So far “Spotlight“, with wins by some major critics groups, is the film to beat.
