Newtown Marks Somber Third Anniversary of Sandy Hook Shooting

For the first time, Newtown students are in school on the anniversary of the tragedy. But it has not been enough to sway the GOP-controlled House and Senate, which generally adhere to the National Rifle Association’s view that expanded background checks wouldn’t stop massacres, and that President Obama simply uses mass-shootings to push a liberal, anti-gun agenda. “Unfortunately, congress has not acted and is complicit in the rate of gun violence deaths that continue to plague our nation”, the legal counsel for Newtown Action Network, Monte Frank, told The Independent.

On December 14, 2012, a lone gunman entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown and shot and killed 20 first-graders, the school’s principal, two teacher’s aides, two teachers and the school psychologist.

Since Sandy Hook, an American youth has died by a gun every other day. “I thank the Stop Handgun Violence organization for their work in preventing gun violence”.

“And one of the kids said, ‘do we get a prize?’ I said ‘yes, yes you get a prize, ‘ ” Cech continued.

Community members are coming together to remember the victims.

“We have some loopholes for one thing you can go to a gun show or you can go on online and buy a gun without a background check”.

“Faith leaders from the various Newtown religious communities will guide the community by reading from our sacred texts, offering prayers for our community and allowing for times of silence for each individual to reflect and/or pray in his or her own way”, the Rev. Matt Crebbin of Newtown Congregational Church said of the event.

355 mass shootings so far this year – averaging more than one per day. Unfortunately, this serves as little surprise for a liberal media that’s been ardent supporters of gun control (as NewsBusters has chronicled over the years).

In addition, she said gun violence costs the US $210 billion annually.

In the three years since then, that proposal has gone nowhere and no federal, national changes have been made. “We’ve accomplished this through requiring accountability and responsibility on the part of gun owners, dealers, manufacturers and law enforcement with respect to reasonable restrictions and gun laws that keep guns out of the hands of unsafe people without infringing on the constitutional rights of lawful owners”.

The gun is, after all, a machine, a mechanical object that causes injuries, like a auto, and vehicle crash deaths in this country have dropped by more than half in 1980 by a public health approach with safer highways and safer auto design.
