Desperate to discover the whereabouts of the self-exiled Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), fighter pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaacs) embarks on a secret mission to the planet Jakku, where a young scavenger, Rey (Daisy Ridley), proves herself a rather remarkable young woman …

It may be billed as a sequel but it often feels weirdly like a remake.

Episode VII busily reconstitutes elements from the first trilogy as a giddy 135-minute showdown between the light and dark sides of the Force approximately 30 years after the tumultuous events of Return Of The Jedi. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, opening on Thursday, is the movie they were looking for. Disney, which bought the rights to Star Wars from creator George Lucas for $4 billion in 2012, has said that it plans to release a new Star Wars film every yearessentially forever. The film is full of stuff that was actually built, and that makes it easier to relate to than the digital world building of which we see so much.
