There are always snubs and surprises when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and the Screen Actors Guild announce their nominations for the annual Golden Globe Awards and the SAG Awards, respectively.
The awards, to be hosted by Ricky Gervais, will be handed out on January 10 here.
In the best foreign film category Belgian drama “The Brand New Testament”, “The Club” from Chile, Finland’s “The Fencer”, French movie “Mustang” and Hungarian project “Son Of Saul” are competing. The big victor, most filmgoers and observers could agree, was audacity itself, as two equally bold sensibilities got the visibility and box office business that, without awards chatter, would otherwise have eluded them.
Veteran actress Charlotte Rampling has been a big part of the best actress conversation for her work in the affecting marital drama “45 Years”, but was locked out of the best actress, drama category, possibly because Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett were both nominated as leads in “Carol“.
-Picture, Musical or Comedy: “The Big Short“, “Joy”, “The Martian”, “Spy“, “Trainwreck”.
SURPRISE: “Mad Max: Fury Road” continues its awards season streak After winning the National Board of Review and picking up several high-profile prizes from critics’ groups, “Mad Max: Fury Road” continues its march to the Oscars.
Redmayne’s “Danish Girl” co-star Alicia Vikander earned a Best Actress nomination, along with a Best Supporting Actress nomination for “Ex-Machina”.
In an awards season that has so far failed to produce a definite heavyweight, Tom McCarthy’s acclaimed Boston Globe drama “Spotlight” came into the Globe nominations as the Oscar favorite. There are plenty of viewers who will be pleased by the three nominations for “Outlander”, Ron Moore’s ambitious adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling romance novels. This time the film landed a “Best Picture- Drama” and “Best Director” nomination for George Miller.
-Screenplay: Emma Donoghue, “Room”; Tom McCarthy, Josh Singer, “Spotlight”; Charles Randolph, Adam McKay, “The Big Short”; Aaron Sorkin, “Steve Jobs”; Quentin Tarantino, “The Hateful Eight”. 21 Century Fox’s division won the the most nominations, indicating that when the award show airs in January, it could take home the most awards.
-Series, Musical or Comedy: “Orange is the New Black”, “Silicon Valley”, “Transparent”, “Veep”, “Casual”, “Mozart in the Jungle”.
Lady Gaga was thrilled with her nomination as best actress in a limited series for her performance in American Horror Story: Hotel.
Also nominated in that category was Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn”, a 1950s tale about immigration.
In the best animated film category, the Charlie Kaufman-scripted, stop-motion animated “Anomalisa” slotted in alongside a quartet of more family-friendly releases: “Inside Out”, “The Good Dinosaur”, “The Peanuts Movie” and “Shaun the Sheep Movie”.
Nominations list in television this year is dominated by streamers.
The 2015 Golden Globe nominations have been announced, and the list of nominees provides irrefutable proof of the growing status of digital-only content within the world of television and film.
