New Hyundai IONIQ hybrid first images revealed

While Toyota has gone positively wild with the new Prius, the Hyundai Ioniq will go for a more elegant and subdued approach.

Hyundai is readying an all-new executive sedan christened the Ioniq, that aims at achieving a blend of alternative-fuel propulsion, a stylish design and class leading aerodynamics.

The Hyundai IONIQ has returned in two fresh teaser images, revealing more details ahead of imminent debut in January 2016. So far, the only information known is that the vehicle will have a lithium-ion battery for the electric version, while the plug-in hybrid and hybrid models will have a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine.

As seen in the renderings of the Ioniq, the vehicle features contours that would minimize the resistance to wind and would assist airflow management over the vehicle’s exterior.

“The IONIQ will deliver a fun and responsive driving experience, while also meeting the needs of those wishing to reduce the impact their motoring has on the environment”.

Inside the IONIQ the smooth, clutter-free theme continues. An ion is an electrically charged atom, “linking to the car’s clever combination of electrified powertrains”, Hyundai said. Our previous spy shots reveal a small array of buttons and knobs will be positioned just below the screen to switch between key functions like media source, navigation, and phone pairing, while HVAC controls will populate the lower space of the console. This theme extends to the aerodynamic wheels and to the sleek headlight clusters, while inside, the IONIQ will use a simpler dash layout than other Hyundais, with greater reliance on touchscreen infotainment systems.

Originally due to make its world debut at the Detroit motor show in January, the IONIQ will now appear first in Korea early next year, before making its global premiere at the Geneva and NY shows in March.
