Alabama running back Derrick Henry, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey are the finalists for the Heisman Trophy, it was announced Monday night.

Henry led the nation in rushing (1,986) and scored 23 touchdowns despite playing in an offense with an inconsistent passing attack. I’m sure his less-than-stellar performance against Oklahoma State and the two games he missed due to injury are what did him in, which is disappointing.

NEW YORK (AP) – Alabama’s Derrick Henry and Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey are hoping to return to the Heisman Trophy to the running backs.

Henry and McCaffrey have both put up phenominal numbers, but it is a result of a large number of carries. “They are justified, and I think they are the favorite because of him (Watson) and I think they have a good all-around football team”.

Henry will likely be considered the favorite after breaking Herschel Walker’s SEC single-season rushing record. The sophomore accumulated 3,496 all-purpose yards, which broke Barry Sanders’ NCAA season record, and 13 touchdowns during his breakout campaign. The Frogs take on OR in the Valero Alamo Bowl on January 2.

The three players have separated themselves, in the opinion of voters, from the rest of the field.

Both Henry and McCaffrey have also shattered the records of former Heisman winners. Watson has accounted for 4,399 yards of total offense and 49 touchdowns.

A quarterback has won the Heisman in each of the last five seasons.

As versatile as McCaffrey has been as the only FBS player since 1996 to compile 1,500 rushing, 500 receiving and 1,000 kickoff return yards in a single season, his TD total (13) is alarmingly low for someone wishing to win the Heisman. Clemson’s Deshaun Watson and Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey were the other two players selected to be up for the honor that goes annually to the best college football player in the country.

Watson QB led top-ranked Clemson to unbeaten season.

“He’s gained more yards in one year than anybody who’s ever played college football”, head coach David Shaw said.

The Heisman race is close this year.

Hes mostly deflected Heisman talk, while quickly sharing credit with teammates.

Gainesville High graduate Deshaun Watson is one step closer to making his Heisman Trophy dreams a reality.
