Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is set to pick up one of his biggest endorsements yet Thursday from the powerful Communications Workers of America union, sources told NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell.

The CWA, which says it has ground operation in 38 states and regularly turns out “tens of thousands” of campaign volunteers, said it’s backing Sanders after conducting a months-long online survey of its members.

Unions behind Clinton include the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which has 1.3 million members; the American Federation of Government Employees, with 670,000 members; as well as the two largest teachers unions in the country. The endorsement will be formally announced Thursday Morning. The organization’s former president, Larry Cohen, has been an unpaid labor adviser to Sanders’ campaign and the CWA has been a vocal opponent of the Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement, which Sanders has assailed as detrimental to middle-class jobs and wages.

The Washington Post reports the Vermont lawmaker’s campaign has emphasized raising money in small increments – the average donation is about $30 – and most of the contributions are coming over the Internet. It’s the largest communications and media union in the USA, and represents more than 700,000 workers. The group endorsed President Barack Obama in 2008 and again during his re-election campaign.
