The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is known for playing by its own mysterious rules, and this year’s Golden Globe nominations proved no exception.

Leonardo DiCaprio, best actor nominee for “The Revenant”: “I am incredibly grateful for their nomination, as well as the recognition they have given to this film and to Alejandro’s (Inarritu’s) vision as its director”.
The nominees in the best supporting actress category are Jane Fonda (“Youth”), Jennifer Jason Leigh for “The Hateful Eight”, Helen Mirren for “Trumbo”, Alicia Vikander for “Ex Machina” and Kate Winslet for “Steve Jobs”. Transparent, an Amazon original, and Netflix’s Orange is the New Black were both nominated for best series (musical or comedy) alongside traditional TV offerings, with additional acting nominations for Judith Light (Transparent) and Uzo Abuda (Orange is the New Black).
Just like Rocky Balboa, Sylvester Stallone was considered a bit of an underdog in the awards race.
– “Maybe it will help me get paid a little better”.
The N.W.A biopic “Straight Outta Compton” got a boost on Wednesday when it was included among the Screen Actors Guild Award nominees for best ensemble drama. This has been a bad week for Keaton, who also didn’t receive a SAG nomination, which casts doubt on the early season prediction that the “Batman”/”Birdman” star would finally win an Oscar.
The Golden Globes doubles down, nominating actors and films in both drama and musical/comedy categories, which makes for twice as many nominations.
More surprising were the two nominations for “Flesh & Bone”, which scored a surprise nomination for limited series or television movie and for lead actress Sarah Hay.
Steven Spielberg’s well-regarded Cold War thriller “Bridge of Spies” received only one nomination for Mark Rylance’s supporting performance as a Soviet spy.
“The Big Short”, which takes a quirky look at the housing bubble collapse that led to the 2008 US recession, led the comedy nominees with four nods; best comedy, screenplay and actor for Christian Bale and Steve Carell.
In the best foreign film category Belgian drama “The Brand New Testament”, “The Club” from Chile, Finland’s “The Fencer”, French movie “Mustang” and Hungarian project “Son Of Saul” are competing. Its nominations for best picture drama (over “Brooklyn”) and best director for George Miller shows that the Warner Bros. summer tentpole has staying power. Other films nominated in this category are “The Revenant”, the aforementioned “Carol”, “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Room”.
HBO’s TV series nominees include Silicon Valley and Game of Thrones, which received only one nomination each, while Veep got two.
The growing popularity of streaming service provider’s original content provides additional indication that it is becoming a big threat for the broadcast networks such as NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox. – “American Horror Story: Hotel” star Lady Gaga on what her nod for best actress in a limited TV series means to her. Even HBO, which conventionally ruled at award times, has been surpassed by these streaming service providers.
