The group added: “Ill treatment of Palestinian children remains widespread and systematic in the Israeli military detention system as children arrested by Israeli forces arrive at Israeli interrogation centers blindfolded, bound and sleep deprived”.

Speaking yesterday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that young Palestinian demonstrators were “driven by despair (at the fact) that a two-state solution is not coming”.

Despite widespread opposition to a two-state solution, 70 percent of the respondents also oppose a one-state solution in which Arabs and Jews enjoyed equal rights.

Large gaps were found between the Palestinians in Gaza and those in the West Bank concerning perception of the current violence in Israel and the West Bank. Most Palestinians believe if the current individual attacks develop into an armed intifada, the violence might serve Palestinian national interests more than negotiations would. Since mid-Sept., Palestinians have killed 19 Israelis in stabbing, shooting & vehicular assaults.

“Tonight, during an operation to make arrests of wanted Palestinians and to seize arms in Qalandiya refugee camp, two attempted car-ramming attacks were made against security forces in two different parts of the camp”, the Israeli army said in a statement, while the Palestinian health ministry confirmed the death of the would-be attackers.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri identified the attacker as Abed Almohsin Hassoneh (21), from the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Hanina.

According to police, the alleged attacker also had an axe inside the vehicle. Of them, 90 per cent said they believe Israel does not abide by the Oslo agreement and 68 per cent support abandoning it. A similar figure supported his resignation in a poll released three months ago.

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat arrived at the site minutes after the attack, which occurred near his home in west Jerusalem.
