In the era of Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal, it is easy to downplay the achievements of Novak Djokovic until you glance at the names he left in his wake by claiming a ninth major title and third Wimbledon crown on Sunday.

A Champions Dance was a Wimbledon tradition for years, but when the Champions’ Dinner moved dates and venues in 1977, the custom disappeared and was never officially brought back.

Novak Djokovic successfully defended his place at the top rank against Roger Federer, on a four-set defeat.

But it was not to be for the 17-times grand slam champion who had been broken just once in 90 service games at this year’s tournament before Sunday’s showdown.

Still, No. 8 remains elusive.

Djokovic is only 28 so has time on his side, especially as Federer is still a contender even at 33.

Barring an injury or some other unforeseeable event, each will go to the U.S. Open in late August as a big favorite.

After the final shot, as previous year.

“He has been aiming to do well at Wimbledon and he has come very close again“.

“I have to say it’s a big challenge playing against Roger”, Djokovic said later.

As well as successfully defending his title in a repeat of last year’s final to add to his 2011 triumph, the Serb also overtook tennis legends such as Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi and Ivan Lendl in the all-time list of major winners.

“Federer, at 33, there’s probably more of a question mark there”.

Two points later, Djokovic again took the measure of a serve from Federer, this one 123 miles per hour, and delivered a down-the-line backhand for another return victor. “Clearly he’s going to be one of the top guys – where, we’ll still have to wait and see. I’m sure he still has many more great years ahead of him”.

But the weather improved quickly and within 20 minutes the court covers were taken off, leaving Federer feeling slightly flustered as tournament officials hurried to get the players back on court.

Djokovic’s frustration mounted as he failed to convert two break points in the first game of the third set then, despite still struggling to stay on his feet, he saved a break point in the next game before going 2-1 up when Federer sent an errant forehand long. Or will he rebound in New York?

It was the ideal rebound for the Serbian who was upset by Stan Wawrinka last month. It was the 200th match win at a grand slam for Djokovic.
