Meanwhile, ratings for the gritty ABC drama How to Get Away with Murder, whose star Viola Davis landed a Globe nomination, have slipped significantly. “The Martian”, meanwhile, was nominated in the comedy category.
Overall, Netflix dominated the TV network list with eight nominations, surpassing HBO and Starz, thanks to series “Narcos” and “Orange is the New Black”.
The awards, to be hosted by Ricky Gervais, will be handed out on January 10 here.
Fox, shut out previous year, landed four nominations thanks to two for “Empire”, plus Rob Lowe in the comedy actor category on its freshman “The Grinder” and Jamie Lee Curtis in its new horror-comedy “Scream Queens”.
The announcement of the Golden Globe nominations on Thursday morning did little to clarify the movie awards season.
All of this bodes well for the film to feature highly in both the Oscar and Bafta nominations, which will be announced next month. Its nominations for best picture drama (over “Brooklyn”) and best director for George Miller shows that the Warner Bros. summer tentpole has staying power. Not only that, but only Game of Thrones got a Globe nomination previous year, despite the fact that the other four shows that did – The Good Wife, House of Cards, The Affair and Downton Abbey – are all still on. The Los Gatos, Calif.-based company overtook the premium network with its tally of SAG Award nominations. And Mad Max received a best drama and a best director nomination. Ruffalo, however, was nominated for best actor in a comedy for his performance as a bipolar father in “Infinitely Polar Bear”.
David O. Russell’s matriarch portrait “Joy”, won nods for best picture, comedy, and best actress for Jennifer Lawrence, a Globe victor the last two years.
Alicia Vikander, best actress nominee for “The Danish Girl” and best supporting actress nominee for “Ex Machina”: “To be considered amongst all these brilliant actresses and their outstanding performances is such an honour”. Along with Elba and Rylance, the supporting actor category was rounded out by Paul Dano (“Love & Mercy”) and Michael Shannon (“99 Homes”).

Carol, the story of a married older woman who falls in love with a young shopgirl in the 1950s, will contend for best drama opposite Pioneer-era movie The Revenant, psychological thriller Room, Catholic Church abuse probe Spotlight and action thriller Mad Max: Fury Road. The fact that Will Smith was snubbed for the SAG and Depp for the Globe could help boost Leonardo DiCaprio’s chances of winning the best actor Oscar for “The Revenant”, since he received nominations from both groups-making him the official frontrunner in the category. The win not only marked Amazon’s first-ever Golden Globe award, but the Jill Soloway comedy also became the first online series to ever win a best series award-comedy or drama-at the annual award show. Up for best comedy are: Amazon’s “Transparent”, HBO’s “Veep”, Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black”, Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle” and Hulu’s “Casual”.
